Adding Perspective to the Mammogram Debate
Cancer prevention expert at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center sheds light on recent changes to breast cancer screening guidelines
When the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released controversial new guidelines changing the age women should begin receiving mammograms, gabbegroup, with MD Anderson’s Public Affairs, worked to put them into perspective for media and consumer understanding. The team enlisted Therese Bevers, M.D., F.A.A.F.P, professor in the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention at MD Anderson to assess the developments and offer her thoughts. The news was another opportunity to discuss the importance of MD Anderson’s recently revamped breast cancer screening guidelines. These translate best practices in cancer prevention employed at MD Anderson into accessible guidelines the public can follow, with risk categories identified and information about when to begin and discontinue screening exams. Dr. Bevers consulted with reporters from National Public Radio, PBS Newshour, USA Today, BusinessWeek and CBS Nightly News, among others to review the key points from the guidelines, share MD Anderson’s recommendations and offer sound advice for women. |
